Nyagatare gets cheap solar power

Hundreds of homesteads in the Eastern Province will soon access off-grid power, thanks to a new rural electrification project “Light up a village” that will provide them cheap solar panels.

The project that has been launched in Nyagatare District in the Eastern Province is part of efforts by the private sector to support government’s rural electrification campaign, said George Heinemann, the managing director Barefoot Power Rwanda, the firm that is spearheading the initiative.

He noted that a strong public-private partnership is crucial for the rural electrification drive to be successful. Heinemann said Barefoot Power Rwanda will provide decentralised pico solar electrification infrastructure to the rural people with no access to the national grid.

Already, over 100 homes in Nyagatare district have been installed with solar energy in the first phase of the project that is expected to be rolled out across the country. A solar kit that lights fours bulds and has a phone charger costs Rwf95,000, while a small one is at Rwf15,000 to install. “We have started with Nyagatare, but we hope to have covered the whole country by the end of next year,” Heinemann said.

It costs $15,000 (about Rwf10.2m) to provide solar kits to about 100 homesteads, he added.

The Light up a village project also supports the UN development goals of promoting social development by providing affordable renewable energy to low-income earners.

“This is an
opportunity
for stakeholders to contribute to the socio-economic development of Rwanda by spearheading the rural electrification campaign,” Heinemann said.

If the project is rolled out across the country, it will greatly relieve domestic consumers the problem of increasing power  outages, sector players said. This could also give the Energu Holding Company time to sort out its power generation and supply challenges, they added.

According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Infrastructure, the country needs to invest about $3b to increase access to electricity from 17 per cent to 70 percent by 2018. Less than 16 per cent of the population has access to electricity, but in rural areas it is about 2 per cent.  The government targets to increase electricity generation from the current 110MW to about 563MW by 2018.

Last month, the former Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority was split into two companies, the Energy Holding Company that will manage energy development and electricity and the Water and Sanitation Company to deal with water resources and distribution.

According to Prof. Silas Lwakabamba, the Minister for Infrastructure, the move will promote efficiency and transparency in the development and distribution of electricity across the country.

Sometimes the way talents like Sitenda Kisakye’s elude the latter stages of Tusker Project Fame confounds you. While East Africans could not save her from eviction, which is understandable they had to save their own, at least everyone acknowledges Sitenda is a talented girl. She has a strong voice.
But which voice was undone by the two songs Hermis (while serving as music director) chose for her that got her on probation twice.

She got the second least votes and that sent her packing alongside Tanzania’s Fess.
So, while we accept this to be a competition like any other, how does it feel losing such talents before they fulfill their potentials?
Sitenda’s eviction leaves Uganda’s hopes on Derrick Kojjo and Daisy Ejang after we lost the Under Cover Brothers a few weeks back. She had been fronted as one of the outright favourites at the start of the competition.

The eviction show was not with its drama what with Judge Juliana clashing opinions with music director Muthoni “The Drama Queen.”

The clash followed Juliana’s remarks that Burundi’s Hope didn’t have a good voice to do a Busy Signal song. Muthoni argued it is not about the songs contestants do, but it is the singing that matters. Well, both were right. It had to be faculty coach Kavutha who settled the storm.

Sunday’s show brings a twist to it. Contestants have been paired and grouped up with Daisy paired with Amos (one of the Kenyan duo) and they will be singing Boyz II Men’s “I’ll make Love To You.”
Daisy was good with her lines during the
training
sessions but they were all warned to watch their breathing and ad libs by coach Kavutha. Kojjo will be singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Man In The Mirror’ t

Team Rwanda’s 19-year old Valens Ndayisenga became the youngest Rwandan rider to win any stage in Tour of Rwanda after he dramatically claimed stage two (Rwamagana-Musanze) race in 4 hours six minutes and 44 seconds, yesterday.

Riders in the 2013 Tour of Rwanda negotiate the sharp corners of Shyorongi on their Rwamagana-Musanze leg yesterday. The New Times/J. Mbanda.
Ndayisenga, a debutant in Tour of Rwanda, beat off stiff competition from compatriot and Karisimbi teammate Abraham Ruhumuriza and South Africa’s Team MTN-Qhubeka rider Jay Robert Thomson, who had won stage one from Kigali-Kirehe on Monday. Ruhumuriza and Thomson came in second and third, respectively, in 4h06’44’’and 4h06’58’’ respectively.

Yesterday’s stage, a distance of 151.9km, was the most gruelling of this year’s Tour of Rwanda legs.

It is the biggest win of the youngster in his
career

Ndayisenga goes into Wednesday’s stage three, Rubavu-Kinigi (69.4km) wearing the Red Jersey reserved for a stage winner.

The sterling performance confirmed Ndayisenga as one of the brightest prospects not only for Rwanda’s cycling but the African continent as well, according to some cycling enthusiasts.

The second leg victory was even more significant for Team Rwanda, having been sealed in the northern city of Musanze, the base of Rwanda’s cycling stars for the last seven years.

Ndayisenga was in the leading group of 14 riders going into the last moments when he and Ruhumuriza peeled away to take a memorable one-two for Rwanda.

But Team MTN-Qhubeka’s Thomson retained the Yellow Jersey.

Yesterday’s stage is the longest in the 2013 Tour of Rwanda.

Yet Ndayisenga was modest in his win. “I am really happy, it’s like a dream come true. I am happy for my teammates too because we work as a team, we have managed to achieve what we planned last night.”

Team Rwanda and Akagera’s Janvier Hadi, who won Monday’s prologue, came in sixth position yesterday. He is in sixth spot in the general classification and has the White Jersey as the best Rwandan rider in the Tour of Rwanda 2013 so far.
